Tuesday, May 15, 2012
As promised from my earlier guest post from author Jess C. Scott (view), the review and giveaway for her brilliantly written book called "The Other Side of Life" is now here! I am pretty ecstatic to be able to offer two lucky winners the chance to put their hands on such a stupendous book. To make it even better, these two copies are offered in an EBook format, which makes this giveaway open worldwide! Make sure you enter today! Giveaway ends May 30th, 12:01am.

Before introducing the review of this book, I wanted to let you in on a little something. When I was offered the chance to do a review by Jess C. Scott, author of the book, I didn't fully know what I was getting myself into. I was somewhat aware of the type of book it was... Cyberpunk meets Elves meets fantasy, amongst other things. I pretty much acted on a hunch. I've been an avid and passionate reader for more years than I can count on my fingers and toes. Books are in my blood and I can smell a good one from miles away! My reader-gut-feeling told me to go for it. So I went! And I, must say, much to my surprise and enchantment, I loved the book! Truly, truly enjoyed it. Even though this book isn't my usual type (never really read this genre), I took a genuine pleasure in diving into the story and getting attached to the characters, who were all unique and nicely portrayed. The book is written with such poise, intelligence and ingenuity, that you quickly get sucked in. And even though it's a fantasy novel with a futuristic taste and a touch of romance, nothing feels out of place, over-the-top or far-fetched. Jess C. Scott juggled with all the elements brilliantly and tastefully. As I was reading the book, I felt as though parallels were drawn between our society, obsessed with perfection and drowned into over-consumption, and the real beauty of life, which lies in genuineness, inner-beauty, real values and life's simple pleasures. I enjoyed how the message was subtly delivered and relayed within the storyline and through the characters. Overall, this book is way-worth reading, as it fun, suspenseful, captivating and smart. Jess C. Scott has a talent for writing and it transpires in this book that I qualify as a must-read!

The story takes us in the not too far future, in July 2035. It is a time where the world, or at least Zouk City, is habited by the human race and the elven race. Tolkien-style elves. One could be fooled by mistaking an elf for a human. Only few features sets them apart. Both races used to share their worlds and mingle together. Times have changed and humans now gravitate in a world of overconsumption. Luxury, beauty and greed is their daily bread. Quite the opposite of the elves, who have remained true to life's real meaning and values. Anya and her best friend Leticia have turned thieving into a career, making sure goods are returned to their rightful owner in exchange for a luscious reward. Their world turned upside-down the day their paths crossed Nim's. A charismatic, enigmatic and cultured elf who is on a mission himself to "steal" back a missing piece belonging to the elven legacy. Impressed with the skilled human duo, he decides to give them an offer they can barely resist. As they quickly meet the rest of the elven trio, Tavia and Dresan, Anya feels herself drawn to Nim in unexpected ways and the chemistry rapidly sets itself between the two. Quickly enough though, Anya and Leticia will realize that their new mission holds it share of romance, deception and surprises. Emotions run high and lives are at stake as the adventure unrolls and takes unexpected turns.
