The "Super Woman" Syndrome

Wednesday, February 29, 2012
I am a mother, thus I am "Super Woman"...
Some days are certainly made to seem and feel that way.
We seem to have all the weight of the world sitting on our shoulders.
Consequently making us turn into "Super Woman"! We put on our pink and violet cape and go on conquering the world... The baby world that is!

We then suddenly have all the powers in the world.
We have eyes on everything, we have hands handling everything, we have our minds thinking of everything.
Makes us wonder, from time to time, if we are not physically in more than one place at once.
Technically impossible, but seeing ourselves go, makes us kind of wonder!
We don't complain, we actually somewhat enjoy it at times. Not at all times.
A little overwhelming it can be. Especially when the household depends on us for it's well-being.
We want help, yet we say "I got it!".
What a paradox!
Do we take it all upon ourselves out of pride? Out of pleasure? Out of instinct? Out of challenge?
Maybe out of all of it!
Ultimately, it is a force much more powerful than our own persona.
The "Super Woman" syndrome makes us do non-sense things.
Like, do the laundry when we should be napping.
Or prepare our grocery list when we should be winding down reading a book.
Even mopping the floors when we should be watching a chick flick.
The real question is: How on Earth did we inherit these powers to begin with?
Are they wired in us, in our DNA?
Must be an accessory attached to the motherhood package. A fine print in our contract.
No matter how you look at it, these powers are undeniably embedded in us.
And no one can take them from us.
We, "Super Women" of the world wear our badges proudly.
Hoping to graduate and obtain our "Super Hero" award.
Proudly handed-over to us from our child's very own hands.
The one and only trophy we will display this proudly... the one that reads "Best Mother In The World".
That is truly the only reason why we do what we do... why we go out of our way the way we do... and why we seem to want to do it all.
It might be that we do it out of guilt. Because we have been appointed this "Super Woman" title, we presume our responsibilities never stop. They never rest.
A "Super Woman" does not take a vacation. She is dedicated to her assignment, every minute of every day.
We most probably could take a break from this super business, but we chose not to...
Even though our eyes carry some not-so-stylish dark bags...
Even though our body feels like it has been hanging on the clothesline for who knows how long...
And even though our mind is like scrambled eggs on a sunday morning... we still don't quit!
Why?!
Because behind that "Super Woman" facade, is the heart of a mother.
And all the powers in the world pale in comparison to our child's happiness.
Knowing he is feeling blessed... just priceless.

Great post! I like the one "I'll get it" lol So true. You forgot to mention how we have two jobs a mom and a wife. Those dark circles under our eyes. NOT attractive. We are always multi tasking! Being a great mom and keeping up with looking good so that those dark circles don't show our everyday stresses.

Awesome article!! Just yesterday my hubby texted me telling me not to unload the new entertainment center from the truck and ended his text with ... Don't try to be a super hero. I texted him back "darn, here I was thinking I was your hero" little did he know I had already unloaded, set up and was relaxing in front of the new entertainment center, 56" tv.

When he came home I purposely sat there watching tv. (not getting up to greet him) He walks in and smiles .. I looked up and said sorry I like being a super hero :P

We've added each other on G+, lol don't know how I've added you there and not visited your blog first, oh well glad to connect with you. Stop by my blog if you would like. http://www.scatteredmusings.net
